INDIALANTIC, Fl., OCTOBER 2014 – Lauren Merrell, a sales agent with Dale Sorensen Real Estate (DSRE) Brevard, has announced that she will be the listing agent for the last remaining structure at the Kentucky Military Institute property in Eau Gallie. The property, a single family home, was originally the Captain’s Quarters and was the only building to survive a fire in 1921.
The Kentucky Military Institute, known as KMI, was originally developed by entrepreneur John Green as a hotel and resort cottages for wealthy northerners. The project included a hotel, with surrounding cottages, a fresh water pool, lawn bowling and tennis courts, running water, and a riding stable with horses. At the time, Green was convinced the area would become a popular tourist destination due to a planned railroad expansion in Florida. When the railroad failed to materialize in the area, Green abandoned the project. The town, named Sarno, became a ghost until Colonel Fowler bought it around 1904, renamed it Military Park and built new cottages. Anywhere from 250-300 students would attend the school, known as The Kentucky Military Inn, or KMI. In 1921, disaster struck when a fire burned all the buildings except for the Captain’s Quarters.
